text 27 Mar earning and learning…

A year ago, I decided I needed/wanted to assist a photographer. I wanted to improve my technical skills. I have done various assisting jobs over the years and it’s always been fun.

Living in Brum, I looked around and wanted to work for (arguabley) the biggest and best (Commercially) anyways. He has just shot the Selfridges Bullring campaign and was working with a London agent. So I started sending him email after email and then calling hinm every other day until her had no choice but for me to buy him a beer!! We got on and the rest is history. I’m now his assistant. Matt’s a cool dude, a little crazy, he works with a really nice crew of stylists and makeup artsits and there is always lots of banter on shoots. We’ve done some cool campaigns for GHD, John Smedley, Barbour amongst others. Check him out www.mattcannon.com

There is no doubt that assisting helps,  me anyways…. I now feel confident with lighting.. of all kinds. Working on high end fashion campaigns has made me realise that it’s not what I want to do. I love asisting and being on the shoots but it’s not for me. I feel that the photographer has not so much control amongst creative directors/stylists/make up etc .  The experience is priceless though. If I’m shooting and in need of some help, Matt is that person.

Here’s some behind the scenes shots from a fashion shoot for Madison SOHO……It was 4 days on loaction at Shugborough Hall and 1 in the studio….. the final day beer was needed!!!!
